Glutathione is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in the body — a cysteine-containing tripeptide that every cell synthesizes to neutralize reactive oxygen species, regenerate vitamins C and E, and drive phase-II detoxification through glutathione-S-transferase conjugation. The ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH:GSSG) is the standard laboratory index of cellular oxidative stress.
