What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded inside the mitochondrial genome itself — one of the founding members of the mitochondrial-derived peptide class that upended the assumption that mitochondria only export energy. Under metabolic stress, MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus and regulates nuclear gene expression, activating AMPK signalling in the process.
The nickname “exercise-mimetic” comes from rodent work in which MOTS-c administration reproduced signature adaptations of endurance training — improved glucose utilization, insulin sensitivity, and running capacity — making it a fixture in metabolism, aging, and exercise-physiology studies.
